«Throughout his life he was a fervent lover of all branches of knowledge. He trained himself reading at night and during the day. The chemical and natural sciences, history, geography, all the manifestations of art, pedagogy, philology. Everything interested him. With these words my father defined my grandfather, Josep Esteve i Seguí, in his autobiography. A concern that he undoubtedly inherited and that allowed him to become an important figure in the pharmaceutical industry of our country.
Antoni Esteve i Subirana had many qualities, some of which were listed by his good friend Josep Laporte. «Dr. Antoni Esteve great scientific and professional legacy is the most genuine testimony of his intelligence, preparation and working skills. Nonetheless, other prime qualities also shaped his personality: deep sensitivity and involvement in serving his country, a sense of responsibility and a tempered fortitude in the good and the bad episodes of his life forged this distinguished Catalan man who served his country in a most unaffected, discreet way».
With that same spirit of concern and sagacity, my brothers and I decided to create in 1983, with the help of Sergio Erill, a foundation that would bear his name and his commitment to research and the dissemination of science to all corners. Over the years, the Foundation has carried out nearly a thousand activities and has involved more than 5,000 professionals in the biomedical areas. To achieve this, it has collaborated with more than 500 institutions, such as universities, research centers, hospitals and scientific associations, among others. These activities have had a national and international aspect. The Foundation has been present on all continents and has attracted leading researchers representing the majority of countries.
This year my brother Josep Esteve i Soler has left us, among whose merits has been chairing the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation during its first 36 years of history. As our father did, his commitment to the field of research was always firm and exciting. A bet that also knew how to transfer to this non-profit institution whose breadth of vision seeks to reach all levels of our society. I take over with responsibility and the desire to continue maintaining this great little project as a benchmark for scientific training, discussion and dissemination. Convinced that both my father and mother, Paquita Soler, would be proud that their legacy in favor of science will last.
