In 2008, The Japanese Immunology Foundation published a book to help young people aged 10 to 14 years better understand the functioning of the immune system. After being impressed by its educational potential, European researchers decided to finance an English translation of the book.
Your Amazing immune system was published in 2009 by the European Federation of Immunological Societies. Now it is the turn of the Catalan version, which the Esteve Foundation and the Catalan Immunology Society will distribute free of charge to schools and libraries on request. The Catalan translation was officially launched on the 18th November 2010 in El Palauet, Barcelona.
With easy terminology and plenty of instructional illustrations, the book Els misteris del sistema immunitari. Com protegeix el nostre cos (Your amazing immune system. How it protects your body) explains the basic aspects of immunology and the immune system.
The second part of the book teaches students about infectious diseases, the autoimmune system and allergic reactions, and concludes by looking at the role of immunotherapy in cancer treatment.
The Japanese edition was edited by Shinobu Yamashita, from the publisher Yodosha, and the illustrations accompanying the text, which remain exactly the same in the Catalan edition, were made by Tomoko Ishikawa. Responsible for overseeing the Catalan publication was Manel Juan, president of the Catalan Immunology Society.
