Los controles antidopaje que se realizan en las grandes competiciones y su repercusión mediática han provocado que durante los últimos años se hable mucho del mal uso de fármacos en el deporte. Sin embargo, no se discute tanto del verdadero efecto de los medicamentos sobre el rendimiento físico ni si realmente existen evidencias sobre todos los posibles efectos sobre el deporte atribuidos a los fármacos. Sobre las relaciones entre el deporte y los medicamentos trató el simposio internacional organizado en 1996 por la Fundación Dr. Antonio Esteve y trata esta volumen número 7 de los Esteve Foundation Symposia. Sus editores son Thomas Reilly, del Research Institute of sport and exercise sciences de Liverpool, y Michael Orme, del Departamento de Farmacología y Terapéutica de la Universidad de Liverpool.
